Discuss

Display the poster below to introduce the R-E-S-P-E-C-T Kindness Skills: Respectful communication, Empathy, Self-regulation, Perspective taking, Expressing gratitude, and Taking kind actions.

Ask students to think about what each skill might mean, consider ways to practice each skill, and explain how these skills can help foster a more compassionate classroom environment.

For example, perspective taking is when we try to see a situation from someone else's point-of-view, and we think about how their actions or feelings might be influenced by their unique experiences, background, and beliefs. This is a particularly useful skill during disagreements, because it can help us understand others' perspectives when they perceive things differently than us.

Throughout the year, when students are navigating a challenging situation, they might refer back to this poster for help!
