Activity Partner
Total time estimate:
15-20 minutes
Activity Objectives
  • Students will meet and learn about new classmates while practicing respectful communication skills such as asking thoughtful questions, listening carefully, and showing interest
  • This activity will help students explore and appreciate similarities and differences between themselves

This activity supports the development of the following social-emotional skills: relationship skills, self-awareness, and social awareness.

Choose

Engage students in a discussion about making new friends. What are some ways that we can learn more about others? Prompt students to come up with a question to ask their classmates, such as:

  1. What are your favorite computer games or programs? How do you like to be creative using computers?
  2. What would be a wonderful day for you?
  3. What are you most thankful for?
  4. What is something that you like about yourself?
  5. If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be and why?
  6. When was the last time you laughed really hard? What was so funny?
  7. Would you like to be famous? What would you want to be famous for?
  8. What is something that you dream of doing?
  9. What activities are you involved in outside of school? (E.g., music, sports, or hobbies.)
  10. What is a part of your culture that is important to you? (E.g., favorite foods, holidays, or traditions.)
Learn

Post the Flipgrid activity below to your classroom Grid, and ask students to record videos asking their questions. Then, students should respond to 2–3 questions asked by others. Encourage them to respond to classmates who they don’t know very well, and practice skills like curiosity and open-mindedness to learn more about each other.

Reflect

Guide students through a post-activity reflection by asking the following questions:

  • What did you learn about your classmates? Did anything surprise you? Why?
  • What are some similarities you share with your classmates, and what differences did you notice?
  • How can we build new friendships, and strengthen existing friendships, by recognizing our similarities and appreciating our differences?
  • How can you get to know your classmates more?
Did you finish this activity? We'd love your input.
