A Recipe for Kindness

Students create and share recipes for kindness - what are the essential ingredients of compassion?

Activity Partner
Total time estimate:
30-60 minutes
Activity Objectives
  • Students will engage in a discussion about different components of kindness, such as forgiveness, curiosity, and understanding, and combine these ideas as a recipe for kindness
  • Then, students will brainstorm strategies for putting these ideas into practice and show compassion to others
Materials
  • Paper, pencils, crayons, markers, paint, and other art materials

This activity supports the development of the following social-emotional skills: social awareness and relationship skills.

Create

Engage students in a discussion about what kindness means to them, and ways they have experienced kindness in the past. Then, ask them about the “ingredients” of kindness. What are the actions, values, and qualities that help us treat others with respect and compassion? For example, perhaps we need “a teaspoon of understanding” or “a sprinkle of forgiveness”.

Have students (either individually or in pairs/groups) create recipes for kindness which combine these ingredients in a creative way (e.g., as a poem, recipe card, poster, etc.). Students’ projects can be written down or completed digitally using a tool such as Flipgrid or Wakelet.

Share

Facilitate a live virtual exchange with your Empatico partner class. During the call, students might share:

  • The ingredients of their recipe, and why they chose them
  • Ways they have practiced these different "ingredients", or want to practice them in the future
  • Situations when it is hardest for them to practice kindness, and ways they can overcome these barriers
Reflect

Guide students through a post-activity reflection by asking the following questions:

  • Did you notice any similarities or differences between your recipes?
  • What did you learn about your classmates from this experience, and how you can be a better friend to them?
  • How do you want to use your recipes in the future to practice kindness? How will this strengthen your relationships with others?
Did you finish this activity? We'd love your input.
